2014 New and Events

August

  • Congratulations to Dr. Leo Han for starting his new position as an Assistant Professor position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Drexel University! Dr. Han has been a highly productive postdoctoral fellow and outstanding mentor in our group. We wish him all the best as he starts his own independent research group!
  • Prof. Yang has been selected to receive a grant from the Stanford Chem-H Institute! This award will support the development of biomaterials as platform technologies that can broadly impact biological and/or pharmacological science.
  • Welcome Sergio to join our group.

July

  • Congratulation to Lorenzo Deveza, a 5th yr. MD/PhD student in our group for successfully passing his Ph.D. thesis defense on “Harnessing Stem Cells as Drug Delivery Vehicles for Therapeutic Angiogenesis: A Biomaterials-Mediated Approach”!
  • Prof. Yang gave an invited talk at the 7th World Congress in Biomechanics in Boston, MA.
  • Prof. Yang gave an invited talk at the Gordon Research Conference on “Signal Transduction by Engineered Extracellular Matrices” in Waltham, MA.
  • Janice’s paper has been accepted for publication in Tissue Engineering Part A!

  • Congratulations to Xinyi Jiang, who has been selected to receive the prestigious Stanford Child Health Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship!
  • Yang lab welcomes new students joining us including Shankara, Alex, Pavin, and Vivian!
  • Prof. Yang gave an invited talk at the 5th International Conference on Tissue Engineering in Kos, Greece.    
  • Janice has successfully passed her Ph.D. thesis defense on “From fat to cartilage: harnessing Stem Cells to catalyze cartilage regeneration”! Congratulation Dr. Lai!
  • Congratulations to Stephanie, Jeffrey and Maya for graduating from Stanford!

May

  • Congratulations to Christine, who has been selected to receive the prestigious Bio-X Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowship (Bio-X SIGF)! This award is one of the greatest honors Stanford gives to a doctoral student pursuing interdisciplinary research.
  • Prof. Yang gave an invited talk at the International Workshop on Multiscale Mechanobiology in Hong Kong.   
  • Congratulations to Dr. Michael Keeney for a Scientist position in Corium International Inc., a bay area-based biotech company on developing drug delivery technologies. Dr. Keeney has been a highly productive postdoctoral fellow and outstanding mentor in our group. We wish him all the best for his future endeavors!
  • Soah's paper on examining protein accumulation in 3D hydrogels has been accepted for publication in Acta Biomaterialia!
  • Our joint paper with Goodman lab on suppressing wear particle induced pro-inflammatory response in macrophages has been accepted for publication in Acta Biomaterialia!

April

  • Prof. Yang has been selected to receive the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from National Science Foundation! The CAREER award is the National Science Foundation's most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research.
  • Prof. Yang co-organizes a symposium on "Biomaterials for Biomolecule Delivery and Understanding Cell-Niche Interactions" at the 2014 Materials Research Society Spring Meeting and Exhibit in San Francisco, CA.
  • Christine's paper on developing 3D in vitro brain tumor model using biomimetic hydrogels has been accepted for publication in Molecular Pharmaceutics!
  • Leo and Xinming presented their research at Society for Biomaterials 2014 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Denver, CO.

March

  • Tianyi's paper on developing combinatorial hydrogels to guide stem cell chondrogenesis has been accepted for publication in Tissue Engineering Part A!
  • Chris and Michael's co-first authored paper on "Co-release of cells and polymeric nanoparticles from sacrificial microfibers enhances non-viral gene delivery inside 3D hydrogels" has been accepted for publication in Tissue Engineering C Methods!
  • Prof. Yang and Janice Lai presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society(ORS) Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA.

February

  • Welcome Heather Waters, a first year Bioengineering Ph.D. student to join our lab for thesis research!
  • Prof. Yang gave an invited seminar at the University of Pittsburg Bioengineering Department.
  • Prof. Yang gave an invited talk at the 3rd Global Congress on Nanoengineering for Medicine and Biology.
  • Lorenzo gave two podium presentations at the 3rd Global Congress on Nanoengineering for Medicine and Biology in San Francisco, CA.

January

  • Prof. Yang gave an invited seminar at the Univ. of California San Diego Bioengineering Department.
  • Prof. Yang has been selected to receive the Rising Star Award from Biomedical Engineering Society-Cellular and Molecular Engineering Special interest Group.
  • Our joint paper with Goodman lab on "Novel biological strategies for treatment of wear particle-induced periprosthetic osteolysis of orthopaedic implants for joint replacement" is published in Journal of the Royal Society Interface!
